Sebenarnya saya pun tak tahu jawapannya, sebab itu saya tanya pengunjung blog ini.
Yang saya tahu, SMS bergantung pada sistem GSM yang baru menyambut ulangtahun ke 20, baru baru ini. Walaubagaimanapun SMS datang kemudian, iaitu pada tahun 1985, SMS dijadikan sebagai piawai GSM. Piawai itu yang menetapkan syarat 160 aksara.
Kenapa 160?
Entahlah, mungkin disebabkan ia dipanggil sebagai 'Short Message System' , maka ia perlulah 'short'.
Masa berubah, nak ubah dari GSM kepada lain bagi sesuatu tempat amat sukar, kerana sebab itu, kita masih gunakan GSM. Tetapi, mesej teks lebih panjang boleh dihantar sebagai beberapa SMS. Hampir semua telefon baru menyokong gabungan 2,3 SMS dihantar tapi kelihatan seperti satu Pesanan Teks.
Pesanan Teks boleh juga dihantar tanpa menggunakan SMS, dimana ia dihantar menggunakan Data Paket. Saya tak pernah cuba dapatkan berapa had saiz mesej teks yang dihantar sebagai MMS.
Sila betulkan saya kalau saya salah.

sebab dah itu memang limit character phone. satu sms 160. kalau lebih dah kira 2 sms. lebih lagi 160 3 sms.

Why 160 Characters?
SMS was designed to deliver short bursts of data such as numerical pages. To avoid overloading the system with more than the standard forward-and-response operation, the inventors of SMS agreed on a 160-character maximum message size.
But the 160-character limit is not absolute. Length limitations may vary depending on the network, phone model and wireless carrier. Some phones don't allow you to keep typing once the 160-character limit is reached. You must send your message before continuing. However, some services will automatically break any message you send into chunks of 160 characters or less. So, you can type and send a long message, but it will be delivered as several messages.

Here's a very simple description of how characters are handled in SMS you send.
You can send 160 characters in an SMS, assuming you send certain characters from this chart: http://www.dreamfabric.com/sms/default_alphabet.html
By certain I mean the characters *not* starting with 0x1B in the left column of that chart. Such characters will instead take two characters when sent in an SMS.
So:
- If you for instance send an SMS with only 'a' in it, you can send 160 characters.
- If you send an SMS with only vertical bars in it, you can send 80 characters.
If you mix such characters, you can figure out yourself how many characters will get place in one SMS.
Then we have the case that you send characters *not* in this chart. Then you can send 70 characters in one SMS.
A bit more technically, you can send 140 bytes in an SMS. A phone tries to send 7-bit characters, which mean you can get room for 160 characters (140*8/7). Some of the 7-bit characters needs to be escaped, as you can see in the link above. If you have one or more characters in the SMS, that is not part of this chart, the entire SMS must be sent in unicode. Then 70 characters can be sent, since each character will take two octets. In theory, you could send 8bit SMS, but I'm not sure your phone does that.
